Hashimoto's: Are You Really Gluten Free?

Dr. Robert Boydston DC, Founder Of The Boydston Institute Comments:

February 10, 2011

An email from a Hashimoto's Patient That Saddened Me...

I received an email today from a lady with Hashimoto's that saddened me a bit. This is what she wrote...

"I have just had my annual blood tests  and have been told I have hashimoto's disease.

From what I read online, there is no cure and when my thyroid can't sustain the attacks on it by my immune system then it goes into hypothyroidism and I need medication for the rest of my life. Seems there is not much to be done."

Newly diagnosed and she is going to sit around and wait for the immune system to kill her gland and send her into hypothyroidism.

Does that sound like a good plan to you?

She is going down a road that is going to lead to fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, and weight gain...

... all based on the false assumption that you can't slow down and modulate the immune attack.

My communication with her has led me to believe that she is going to have to go down the long and winding Hashimoto's road before she considers a new alternative... a better way.

If you are not already a patient in my practice, and you don't want to go down that long and unforgiving Hashimoto's road or maybe you have been traveling it for too many years and want to address the immune system (the real problem) then click the link below:

Synthroid To Treat Hashimotos? What Happened To Logic In Healthcare?

Blue_puzzle I get the opportunity to consult with Hashimoto's from all over the world, and whether they are from Australia, England, Hong Kong, or the United States, the standard treatment protocol for Hashimoto's stays pretty consistent.

I bet you can guess what the treatment is. Your right... give some sort of thyroid replacement until the TSH moves below 1.0 and then consider the case 'properly managed.'

What about the fact that the immune system is slowly destroying your thyroid gland? Shouldn't that be addressed?

Some patients are falsely led to believe that Synthroid and other forms of replacement hormone actually treat the Hashimoto's immune process. This couldn't be further from the truth. Synthroid does nothing to slow down the immune attack on the thyroid gland, which is why thyroid replacement-only treatment is completely inadequate for Hashimoto's.

Now there are actually some practitioners who believe that giving high does of synthroid will suppress the natural production of the thyroid and since the gland is not producing hormones (because the medication suppressed it) then the immune system won't attack the gland anymore.

Here is where you are required to apply a bit of logic. First of all the low thyroid problem started in the first place because the immune system is destroying the thyroid gland and decreasing the amount of hormone the gland is naturally producing.

The goal of treatment should be to slow down or halt the immune attack against the thyroid gland so that hormone production can approach normal output levels.

In the above scenario. where we are suppressing the thyroid gland with medication, we are making the dose of thyroid medication so high that the gland stops producing hormones naturally. Instead of slowing the immune attack we are shutting down the thyroid gland with medication, and functionally doing the same thing the autoimmune process was doing to the gland in the first place.

Where is the logic in that??

Do your doctors mention or acknowledge the immune systems role in your thyroid problem? How do they say they are addressing it? Leave your comments below.

Fibromyalgia Treatments Mistake #2...

Fibromyalgia Treatment Mistake 2 In my last post I advised you to avoid the trap of letting doctors attribute every new symptom you have to your 'fibromyalgia'. Sometimes doctors get lazy if you give them an excuse. Many of them use a fibromyalgia diagnosis as just THAT excuse.

Today I want to share fibromyalgia treatment mistake #2. I hope that as I share these pearls of wisdom with you over the next few weeks that it serves as a guide that will empower you to make the best decisions possible.

Fibromyalgia Treatment Mistake 2: Falsely Believing That All Of The 'Correct' Tests Have Been Done, And That Everything On Your Lab Reports Is 'Normal'.

This is a huge trap fibromyalgia patients fall into, that you absolutely must avoid.

Where my Institute is located in Central California, many local fibromyalgia patients have traveled to one of the big diagnostic clinics such as Stanford Medical, The Sansum Clinic, or UCLA Medical.

They go there, spend a couple days doing tests, and then come out with the same thing they had before: a report that says that the labs are 'normal' and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia.

Then the patient is falsely satisfied, feeling that EVERYTHING has been done, and they continue on the path of taking medications or just living with the pain, fatigue, and the rest of the symptoms that go along with it.

The truth is zero functional testing has been done. They may have ran MRI's and didn't see obvious abnormalities. They ran the basic blood work and it didn't appear to be abnormal, and then they call it a day.

If you accept that everything has been done, then you have lost at that point, because you will stop searching for answers and information that will help you.

You may never make it to a doctor who does functional testing, and will look at functional ranges, and put all of the pieces together for you.

So don't accept fibromyalgia as your life sentence. You deserve to feel well. It is possible.

Be on the lookout for the next blog post in a couple days... Mistake #3 is very common, and best to completely avoid.

The 7 Deadly Fibromyalgia Treatment Mistakes...

Fibromyalgia Treatment Mistakes
As a doctor who has dedicated his professional life to helping fibromyalgia and hashimoto's patients reverse the cause of their symptoms with our functional, whole person approach... I have seen 7 critical mistakes that fibromyalgia patients make in their health restoration journey.

I want to help you avoid those mistakes, because you absolutely deserve to feel well, alive, vibrant, without pain, and without symptoms.

My hope is that by sharing these 7 treatment mistakes that it will serve as a guide that will help you not only know what to avoid, but more importantly to provide a framework for making great treatment decisions in the future.

Deadly Fibromyalgia Treatment Mistake #1: Accepting 'Fibromyalgia' As The Label For All Of Your Symptoms

The truth is... your body is sick and malfunctioning. What commonly happens is that when no simple explanation can be found for your symptoms you get labeled with fibromyalgia.

When you first got diagnosed you may have been happy to finally have something to call it, a name to refer to your symptoms by. It's scary having symptoms that nobody can explain. It leaves you with angst and worry. Your mind wonders if there is some underlying process that is more serious, and when you finally get that fibromyalgia label you let out a sigh of relief.

Soon you probably realized that this fibromyalgia label did not lead to a straight forward treatment or solution.

A diagnosis that gives a set of symptoms a name, but does not lead to a solution is not helpful. If you are not careful every single new symptom you have will be attributed to your 'fibromyalgia' and therefore not explored properly. You need a doctor who will explore all of the specifics of how your body is truly functioning, from a big picture, functional approach.

So if you have already been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, then don't get stuck in that trap where everything is now 'fibromyalgia.' You still deserve to be cared for, taken seriously, and respected. Don't let that diagnosis be the excuse for doctors to just brush everything off, and stop looking for answers.

In my next blog post, I will share fibromyalgia treatment mistake #2. It is going to shatter a commonly held misconception I see so many fibromyalgia patients get led to believe. You wont wan't to miss this one.
