An email from a Hashimoto's Patient That Saddened Me...

I received an email today from a lady with Hashimoto's that saddened me a bit. This is what she wrote...

"I have just had my annual blood tests  and have been told I have hashimoto's disease.

From what I read online, there is no cure and when my thyroid can't sustain the attacks on it by my immune system then it goes into hypothyroidism and I need medication for the rest of my life. Seems there is not much to be done."

Newly diagnosed and she is going to sit around and wait for the immune system to kill her gland and send her into hypothyroidism.

Can Hashimoto's Be Reversed?

I received this question from a Hashimoto's suffer via email today.

Dr. Boydston, can Hashimoto's be reversed?

I wanted to address this question here on the blog because I know many people out there desperately want to know if Hashimoto's can be reversed. They want to know if they are going to have to just live with the awful symptoms. I am going to tell you emphatically that THERE IS HOPE for Hashimoto's sufferers. Hashimoto's CAN be reversed. Let me explain:

An important thing to understand is that Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease. The immune system has turned against the thyroid gland and is slowly attacking and killing it. From all of the scientific literature we know that Hashimoto's has a genetic component. This means that Hashimoto's sufferer's are born with the genes that make them susceptible. At some point the genes "turn on" and the process of destruction begins.
