Dr. Robert Boydston, a Chiropractor in Fresno...shares his 2009 Goals:
2009 is upon us. The buzz is in the air and everyone is talking about their 2009 resolutions and goals. Most people who know me, know that I am an avid runner. I picked up the hobby about 5 years ago and have been running ever since.
In 2005 I ran my first marathon...the California International Marathon in Sacramento. This was a big thing for me. At that point I wasn't even sure I could push my body that far. During the time I was training for the marathon...one of the big sports drink companies was running commercials that showed an iron man triathalete...literally have their body run out of gas. Anyone who saw it will remember the image of the athlete crawling...no joke...across the finish line. There was times during my training cycle when I had that image flash across my mind...only it was me crawling.
Distance running is as much a mental exercise as a physical one. I was running with my training partner just 2 mornings ago and I brought my ipod with me. It is usually not appropriate to listen to music when you are running with someone...and my partner asked why I had brought it. We were doing speed work...fast miles...followed by a slower jog...followed by another fast mile. This sort of training is new to me so I told him, "I brought the music so when it really starts to hurt I can tune out and just push myself." If is this mental aspect...as well as the physical...that I really enjoy about running.
I completed my training in 2005...and crossed the finish line at four hours and 4 minutes. My goal was to be under four hours...so I wasn't that far off. The week following that first marathon was the only week in the last 5 years that I haven't done some running. Since then each year I tell myself that I am going to train seriously again...but something always comes up and it gets pushed to the back burner.
Not this time. I am making my goal very public because I know someone is going to give me a hard time if I decide to back out. Plus we are expecting our 4th child, a baby boy, in June so it is now or never. Maybe not never but there is something about waking up all hours of the night with a newborn that causes you to not want to wake up at 4:30AM and run. So on the first weekend in May 2009 I will be on the starting line at the Newport Beach Marathon.
Do I have a time goal? Yes..but I am not going to make that known just yet. We will see how training progresses...I only have about 15 more weeks of training before the Marathon. It is definitely a more agressive goal that my first one...we'll see how it goes.
Do I have other goals? Of course. My list is huge...and it is constantly reviewed and revised. It is important to have goals. Everyone needs written goals. No one can tell you what they should be...but you need them.
Other goals I have include increased health for myself and my family. For us this includes exercise, proper nutrition, and regular neurological chiropractic care. If you are not healthy...if you body is not functioning at an optimal level...you can't meet your other goals...you can't serve your community, family, and loved ones at a high level.
If your goal in 2009 is to increase your health and well being...or if you know someone who is sick...or chronically ill...send them into us. Illness is a result of abnormal function in the brain and nervous system, hormone system, or the endocrine system. With the proper testing and brain based assessment..help is within reach. Our goal to increase the health and well being of this community...through non-drug, chiropractic, and nutritional interventions. This can't be accomplished without your help.
